Reading Success Plan (RSP) Information

Missouri statute Section 167.645, RSMo (SB 681) requires school districts to conduct a foundational reading assessment as well as a dyslexia screener annually. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has approved i-Ready Assessment Suite as a Missouri Foundational Reading Assessment and dyslexia screening tool.

Missouri’s Foundational Reading Assessment helps identify students who may have some reading difficulties. Students are assessed in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension using i-Ready Diagnostic. The results of the assessment will help identify students who are in need of a Reading Success Plan (RSP).

If students are identified as at risk or having substantial reading deficits, a Reading Success Plan will be created. This is a detailed plan on how we will support students in the area of reading in the classroom and/or reading intervention groups. Once identified, teachers, reading interventionists and special education teachers can provide instructional support targeted to student needs, monitor student progress, and adjust instruction as needed.

Higbee School District's Reading Success Plan Process

1.       All K-5 students take the i-Ready Reading Diagnostic and Literacy Tasks at the beginning of the school year. (Kindergarten begins in December)

2.     The data from the i-Ready diagnostic and Literacy Tasks are used in correspondence with the RSP requirements chart (in compliance with Missouri statute Section 167.645 RSMo sb681) to determine which students need a Reading Success Plan. The data from the i-Ready diagnostic is sent home with students in September.

3.       In October, families are notified during parent teacher conferences if their child will be receiving a Reading Success Plan. Review of the plan will take place at parent-teacher conferences. At this time, families will also be notified if their child has met the criteria to exit their Reading Success Plan.

4.       If a student is receiving a Reading Success Plan, families will receive a copy of the plan, along with the i-Ready Diagnostic data, during parent-teacher conferences.

5.       Students with a Reading Success Plan will receive targeted interventions in the areas of greatest need (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, or comprehension). Progress will be reported to parents throughout the school year.

How did my child qualify for a Reading Success Plan?

All K-5 students take the i-Ready Diagnostic for Reading and i-Ready Literacy Tasks at the beginning of the school year. The i-Ready Literacy Tasks are administered in a one-on-one setting with their teacher. 

A combination of i-Ready scores, Lexile level, and literacy task scores are used to determine if a Reading Success Plan is needed. 

Who will be involved in creating my child's Reading Success Plan?

The classroom teacher, building administration, and reading interventionists (and special education teachers and EL teachers, if applicable) will work together to create a personalized plan for your child and will have it ready to share at parent-teacher conferences at the end of October.

What can I do to help my child at home?

There are Reading Success Plan resources for parents on the district website, listed above.

How long will my child have this plan?

This will be an ongoing plan with progress monitoring occurring throughout the year to check your child’s growth.

If a student reaches their learning goals, it is possible to exit a Reading Success Plan.

A student will be eligible to exit from the Reading Success Plan after demonstrating grade-level proficiency on two consecutive i-Ready Diagnostics, as well as consistent grade-level performance on progress monitoring assessments and in the classroom setting.

Does this mean my child will be getting Reading Intervention Services?

Not necessarily. A Reading Success Plan does not guarantee reading intervention. The student’s Reading Success Plan will be fulfilled by the classroom teacher, reading interventionist, or special education teacher, depending on the needs of the individual student.

Does this mean my child has dyslexia?

Qualifying for a Reading Success Plan does not automatically mean your child is at risk or has some risk of dyslexia.

The i-Ready Diagnostic for Reading and i-Ready Literacy Tasks helps to identify students who may be displaying characteristics of dyslexia. The i-Ready Diagnostic does not diagnose dyslexia.
